Buildings and user behaviour
By connecting the building operation with the end-users needs through everyday services, we build a better understanding of users’ behavioral patterns in general and the potential for more pro-environmental behavior patterns in particular on the systematic level. Such an approach makes sense for a long-term vision for sustainable buildings and people’s life inside.
Short report from the seminar
The discissions were led by Elena Malakhatka, doctoral student and researcher at KTH. Elena started by giving an overview of research in KTH Live-In Lab in general but with a focus on her own research. This was followed by four presentations from persons from both Academia and industry. After the presentations and a short break a lively discussion took place.

It will be an ongoing focus of many research groups at KTH taking slightly different approaches. Still, all aiming in the same direction: A better understanding of designing better living environments for a healthy and environmentally sustainable future. Also, covid-19 is stressing the pursuit of our homes, which are becoming multi-functional spaces for life, work, and entertainment. Most of the speakers highlighted an urgent need to focus on the human-centred approach for the future buildings and the current spaces we have to remodify them into something, what is needed for end-users today.
Donald Norman’s quote has become a good summary of the meeting:
“We must design for the way people behave,
not for how we would wish them to behave.”
